Au Train is centrally located in Alger County in the magnificent Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are in the heart of the Hiawatha National Forest, easily accessible via highways M-28 or U.S. 2. yet only 12 miles west of Munising, 9 miles west of Christmas, on Lake Superior. Make it home base for your vacation pleasure.
Whatever your ideal vacation needs are, you'll find them in the AuTrain area. The whole family can enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, camping, waterskiing, canoeing, hiking, biking or just plain relaxing. AuTrain Lake and Lake Superior have beautiful sandy beaches. AuTrain Lake is famous for great fishing and unbelievable waterskiing. The AuTrain River is one of the safest and most scenic and enjoyable streams in the state for canoes and kayaks. The days are warm and nights are cool. This is the perfect place to get away from it all. Mother Nature treats the area to a blaze of color during late summer and early fall!
Fall Fishing is great in both the many inland lakes of the area and in Lake Superior. Deer and Bear as well as Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock hunting are excellent. In the winter, enjoy miles of groomed snowmobile trails, ice fishing on AuTrain Lake and Lake Superior, or perhaps enjoy snowshoeing or cross country skiing through our vast wooded areas. In the spring, Woodlands are carpeted with wildflowers and mushrooms peak through the ground. Trout fishing is excellent in the river and numerous streams as well as Lake Superior.
Salmon are running too and what a treat to have a fresh fish dinner! Visit and photograph the many waterfalls in the area. Bring your own canoe or rent one here, pack a picnic and make a trip down the AuTrain River. You may want to go all the way to Lake Superior or stop at one of the take-out places along the way. Visit AuTrain Falls located south of AuTrain on the AuTrain-Forest Lake Road. Watch for the signs and enjoy this delightful waterfalls. Scott Falls is located 1/2 mile east of AuTrain on Highway M-28 across from the Roadside Park and can be viewed from your car. Stop at the little park and take a walk on the sand beach and enjoy Lake Superior. Interpretive signs tell about "A Face in the Rock", part of the tradition of the local Ojibwa.
