The village of Baraga is named after Bishop Frederic Baraga, the "Snowshoe Priest" from Slovenia. The last of his five missions is located at Assinins, two miles north of town where he established the St. Paul the Apostle Church in 1890. The church burned in 1902 and was replaced by the present church, a Michigan Historic Site.
The Municipal Marina offers two boat launches and a public pier for fishing or just sitting and enjoying the outstanding view of the bay. L'Anse was founded in the early 1870's and features a delightful Waterfront Park with a marina, benches, restroom, picnic tables, playground, and a path to the Falls River Waterfalls. The green buoy marks the remains of the vessel Northerner for scuba divers to enjoy.
