The delightful Cabin "au bord du lac" is located only 5 miles south of Houghton, MI or 3 miles north of Chassell on the shores of Portage Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This cozy rental waterfront cabin has a sandy swimming beach with a dock for sunning, reading, or just relaxing. Outstanding fishing and boating on Portage Lake with boat and kayak rentals nearby.
The living room overlooks Portage Lake with a love seat, chairs, cable TV/VCR and a collection of movies you might like to view. Cabin "au bord du lac", a cabin by the lake, has one bedroom with a double bed, dresser, desk with chair, and a patio door that opens onto the deck overlooking Portage Lake. The perfect spot for your morning beverage while you enjoy this awesome view of the lake. There is an additional sleeping area in the living room with a daybed so the cabin will sleep up to 4 guests. Linens, towels, and paper products are provided. The newly redone bathroom has a shower.
The cozy cabin with a French ambiance has a complete kitchen with full sized appliances, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and cooking and dining utensils. Large entryway for hanging clothes and storage.
The deck in front of the cottage is where you will spend time enjoying the view or cooking a meal on the grill. The deck is equipped with a table and chairs, teacart, and additional lawn furniture. The yard contains a wooden play set, swing, slide, a basketball net, and a fire pit for your campfires. Wood is provided. Portage Lake is one of the premier fishing lakes in the Upper Peninsula with trophy walleye, northern pike, small mouth bass, perch, crappie, panfish, and a variety of trout that just might bite on your line. If fishing isn't your thing, there is a wonderful fresh fish market at the top of the hill in Hancock for some fish cooked on the grill.
The area around Chassell, Houghton, and Hancock is a wonderful place for recreational activities. Try the many area hiking & biking trails through the wooded areas, boat, canoe, or kayak the Keweenaw Water Trail with 4 segments from Baraga through Portage Lake to the North Entry at McLain State Park, or golf our area courses. Bird watchers will enjoy the Sturgeon River Slough just south of Chassell where visitors will find an observation platform and the 1.5 De Vriendt Nature Trail. A great place for bird and animal watching. Enjoy breakfast or lunch at the Lunch Bag on Sheldon Avenue in Houghton. Serving from 6 am to 5 pm. Closed Sunday. You can take a day trip north through the Keweenaw Peninsula and enjoy the beauty of the Keweenaw and experience the great copper mining heritage of the area. Visit some of the 19 heritage sites in the Keweenaw National Historic Park, tour the Quincy Mine at the top of the hill in Hancock, or stop at Copper Mining Museum in Calumet. Be sure to take the Brockway Mountain Drive for an awesome view, visit area waterfalls, or maybe prowl through the Central Mine location. The Copper Harbor Lighthouse, Eagle Harbor Light Station, and Sand Hills Lighthouse are all open for tours.
Winter lovers will enjoy the many cross-country ski trails at Michigan Tech, Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Maasto Hiihto Trails in Hancock, and the 8k Chassell trails, just 3 miles south of the cabin. All are groomed and ready for some wonderful skiing . . . Some trails are also used during the summer for hiking and biking.
Mount Ripley is a challenging downhill ski hill for skiers and snowboarders with a chair lift and rentals available. Ice skaters will find several ice rinks in the area or try out some snowshoes for a fun afternoon in the deep snow. and enjoy the beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
