DISTRICT V GFWC
CONVENTION
OCTOBER 23, 2009
PINE MOUNTAIN LODGE IN IRON MOUNTAIN,
MICHIGAN
The District V GFWC convention will be at the Pine
Mountain Lodge in Iron Mountain, MI, October 23,
2009.
The theme is "Literate and Artistic Ladies of the
Club". It is based on the book written by Helen Hooven
Santmyer ". . . and the Ladies of the Club". This book took
50 years to write and sold two (2) million copies. It
ís still in print and is a classic in Victorian
literature. A lengthy but great read!!
Besides reports from our state officers, we will have
workshops on how we can become involved in "GFWC's Focus on
Literacy" presented by Pat Krah, State Chairperson.
"Prescription Drug Abuse" presented by Pat Boes, State
Chairperson and "Buddy for Life" presented by Denise Jacobs,
District Chairperson. All projects are chaired by Upper
Peninsula GFWC members.
Our keynote speaker will be Gail Galotta, author,
playwright, and columnist from the Iron Mountain Kingsford
club. She will tell us of her career and adventures in
jurnalism. She won 1st price in the GFWC short story contest
and has written the book "On Angelís Wings" based on
the WW11 glider project of the hosting club.
We will be entertained by Shirley Nelson at our
Luncheon. She will present a book review on ". . . and the
Ladies of the Club". We will also be entertained by Judy
Magnuson, a concert pianist and past Interlochen
winner.
The ladies of the Iron Mountain/Kingsford club will
have their artistic and literary talents on display. Among
the GFWC prize winning artists: Norma Dyert - oil and water
colors; Karen Larson - ceramic and copper artist; Mary Baker
- art works in many forms; Terry Sovey - Costumed porcelain
dolls of the featured book by Terry Sovey. Gail Galotta will
have her book on display to autograph. If you have artists
in your club that would like to display their work, please
bring the artists and art or literature to the
convention.
Our project to raise money for Bay Cliff's "Suds and
Duds "building will be a gently used book sale. It would be
much appreciated if your clubs will collect books in good
shape for this. Please bring them the evening
before.
Denis Jacobs denise@jacobsth.com
is the chairperson for the District V Convention. Any
questions, ideas or comments, please send them to Denise or
