RECREATION IN ONTONAGON COUNTY

Ontonagon County has over 1,300 square miles of forests, lakes, streams and Lake Superior shoreline. Most of Ontonagon County is public land for you to explore and enjoy.

Miller's Cottages and Vacation Homes are only 14 miles from The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness, Michigan's largest state park. It contains 92 square miles of mostly undeveloped wilderness. The terrain is rugged and beautiful, accessed by a number of hiking trails.

FISHING - Fishing is rewarding and productive in Ontonagon County. Lake trout, steelhead, brown trout, whitefish, coho and chinook salmon can be found in the cold deep waters of Lake Superior. Walleye, northern pike, bass and jumbo perch populate the countless inland lakes. Brook trout are abundant in many streams. A marina with all the amenities is located in Ontonagon.

SUMMER - Swim, boat or fish in crystal clear Lake Superior. On shore, pick agates or driftwood and then watch a spectacular sunset followed by a beach fire. Visiting the beautiful waterfalls, hiking, canoeing, biking, jogging, golfing, sightseeing, exploring old ghost towns, mine sites and cemeteries, bird watching, sunbathing and sailing are some of the activities you may enjoy.

Ontonagon County has over 50 miles of Lake Superior shoreline, perfect for personal watercraft riding. Docking facilities are located at the Ontonagon Village Marina. The canoeing enthusiast will find ample canoe routes on the Ontonagon River and other smaller rivers

FALL - Enjoy nature's color show outdoors and a cheery fire indoors (we provide the wood). Hiking and hunting are popular too. WINTER - Ontonagon County gets an average of 200 inches of snowfall annually, which makes for unparalleled winter recreation on the slopes and trails. "Big Snow Country" means magnificent skiing and snowmobiling. Snowmobile rental nearby.

SKIING - The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Ski Area has power-tilled runs through magnificent old growth forests, with spectacular views of Lake Superior. Two chairlifts, a T-bar and a rope tow make for short lift lines. There is a 641' vertical drop, the highest in the Midwest. A casual family atmosphere makes "The Porkies" special.

The Park maintains 30 miles of groomed Nordic trails that challenge and reward the adventurous cross country skiers.

SNOWSHOEING - Opportunities for snowshoeing abound in Ontonagon county with thousands of acres of snow-covered back country wilderness to explore.

SNOWMOBILING -There are nearly 400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Ontonagon County that pass through some of the most beautiful scenery to be found in the midwest. Trails connect to others in the western U.P. and beyond. Snowmobile rentals nearby.
