May 2003

Lumberjack is back -- in a 50th Anniversary Edition! This is a firsthand account of lumbering and community life at the turn of the last century. The Golden Anniversary Edition has been completely re-designed and expanded -- now including 78 historic photographs and illustrations, editors' notes, glossary of lumbering terms, map and author biography. An exciting era in the history of the country comes back to life for a new generation of readers.

During the height of the white pine lumbering boom years, millions of board feet of logs were cut in deep woods camps, driven down the rivers to sawmills on the Great Lakes and shipped by schooner or barge to build a nation.

During this exciting time, William Crowe arrived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1893 at the age of 17. He worked for the Chicago Lumbering Company, observed all aspects of lumbering and community life and later bought the company. In 1952, he set down his experiences and observations in a small book, long out of print. Two of Crowe's granddaughters, an editor and a consultant, have incorporated his firsthand story into this new edition.

Sample chapters: Lumbering Towns and Company Men; The River and the Woods; The Waterfront; At the Sawmills: Cribs, Yards, Office; Kerosene Days; Buying the Chicago Lumbering Company

(1952 edition):

"An authentic first-hand account...which tells the whole story of big-scale lumbering in the Upper Peninsula during the 1890s and early 1900s. Chapter by enthralling chapter, Crowe recounts the times involved in the "big pine" operations...it rivals anything so far written...rich in description and alive with thrilling episodes." Marquette Mining Journal

(2002 edition):
"Lumberjack: Inside An Era In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan is an informed and informative presentation of the lives, times, and personal experiences of the lumberjacks of Michigan's timber harvesting history during the glory days of Michigan's timber industry. Black-and-white photographs intersperse William Crowe's personal testimony of his life and hard work ... this exceptional and candid account, gives the reader a first-hand look of what it was like... in Michigan's Upper Peninsula forests."
