In the Refuge you'll experience U.P. nature at its finest - no roads, houses, or power lines to spoil your wilderness adventure. Bird watchers should look for Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter Swans, Canada Geese, Common Loons, and a delightful variety of song birds among the over 200 bird species that live in or migrate through the Refuge. Wildlife enthusiasts may see white-tailed deer, river otter, beaver, mink, coyote, wolf, moose, or black bear. Skill, patience, and a bit of luck are the keys to wildlife viewing success. Fishermen will want to try their luck with Pike and Walleye. Canoes and kayaks for rent with pick-up service at Big Cedar Campground The river in this section has a current of about 4 to 5 miles per hour and is from 2 - 10 feet deep with a sand-gravel bottom. You will need to steer around trees, logs and low-hanging branches. Sandy beaches along the riverbank offer scenic picnic opportunities.
