By Don Shirley Manistique's public access site is near the mouth of the Manistique River, between the US-2 bridge and Lake Michigan. It's just off the road to Trader's Point which can be seen from US-2. Walleye season opens May 15th and fishing is very good from then through June. Fish the 3/4 mile from the paper mill to the mouth of the river. People should also be able to catch an occasional Bass or Pike. The water in the river ranges from 3' to 20' and the walleye come into the shallower water at dusk. From July 1st through September 15th, Manistique is the main port for Salmon fishing about 10 miles offshore (in Lake Michigan). There is also outstanding salmon fishing in September in the river. The Salmon are moving upstream to spawn and can be caught with regular light tackle.
