Mushers: Fred, Jennifer, Bobbie Jo, and Greg Drive your own dogsled through the wilderness of the Hiawatha National Forest Dogsledding Tours start December 1st
and run to April 30th Wilderness Trail Outfitters offers dog sledding trips of 2 hours, 4 hours, 1 day (6 hours), two days, and Wilderness Experience Overnight Tours of 2 days or more. On the overnight tours, you will drive your own dogsled to a wilderness lodge where you will spend the night and then dog sled back the next day on a different trail. Located just off Federal Forest Highway 13, 23 miles west of Manistique and 15.6 miles north of US-2 in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan. (Map). Fifty four highly trained dogs will happily take you down the trail on your adventure. Watch carefully when the dogs are being hooked up to the sled. All is quiet until we go to get the first dog, then barking and chaos and the dogs are soon ready to run. The air is electrified by the excitement of these incredible dogs. Once you start on down the trail, the dogs move swiftly and quietly, doing what they love the most. You silently slide through the deep forests, experiencing the sheer magic of dogsledding.
You will learn all aspects of mushing, including commands, braking, steering the sled and how to care for your team. You will feel a kinship with your dogs as you travel through the north woods. Wilderness Trail Outfitters maintains about 300 miles of dogsled trails, guaranteeing that you will not see the same trail twice in a row. Some customers do request to travel certain trails provided the weather conditions are right, and we will do everything we can to accommodate you on your wilderness dogsled adventure. Wilderness Trail Outfitters offers dog sledding for beginning, intermediate and advanced mushers. For beginners, there is a short class in dogsledding before we start out.
