The Iron Mountain Iron Mine (originally the East Vulcan Mine) was a working mine producing about 22 million tons of iron ore from about 1870 to 1945 when it closed. The ore was taken by railroad to ports on Lake Michigan where it was loaded on freighters and taken to the steel mills in the Midwest. It was reopened in 1956 and offers very interesting tours of what was once a working iron mine.  

The tour starts at the Rock Shop where visitors are provided with raincoats and hard hats for the tour through ancient rock and ore formations. The tour starts with a train ride through a lighted tunnel carved through the rock formations and continues with a short walk down a tunnel to a large lighted stope or cavern 400 feet underground created by years of mining.  Old mining equipment is located at various spots along the tour with information supplied by your knowledgeable guide. It is chilly in the mine so a jacket is recommended for comfort.

ROCK and SOUVENIR SHOP
The mine’s Rock Shop is a treasure of rocks and minerals of all kinds as well as other interesting items pertaining to mining and a wide selection of souvenirs. Enjoy a refreshing drink of our free artesian well water or a cup of coffee while you browse through these beautiful rocks.
